French lottery operator La Française des Jeux (FDJ) has emerged as the new operator of the Irish National Lottery, winning the bid against global lottery operator Allwyn. FDJ announced the signing of an agreement for the acquisition of Premier Lotteries Ireland (PLI), the current operator of the Irish Lottery on July 27, 2023. The acquisition is valued at €350 million (US$384.26 million). Other companies that bid for PLI included International Game Technology and Australia’s Lottery Corp.
“The PLI team looks forward to partnering with FDJ for an even better performing Irish National Lottery and contributing to FDJ’s international expansion in the lottery industry,” said PLI Managing Director Andrew Algeo.
Through this acquisition, FDJ confirms its intention to expand internationally, marking the first time it has taken control of a foreign lottery. CEO Stéphane Pallez stated that the acquisition aligns with their international development strategy and core business while adhering to a recreational, responsible, and redistributive gaming model.
The ownership structure of the Irish Lottery remains unchanged, and Ireland retains ownership with the National Lottery regulator continuing to regulate the operation. The transaction is expected to be finalized before the end of the year, subject to approval by the Irish National Lottery regulator.
In 2022, PLI achieved a turnover of €140 million (US$153.7 million), resulting in an EBITDA margin of 24%, similar to FDJ’s performance. FDJ expects the acquisition to contribute 5% to its annual performance this year.
