La Fleur’s Magazine’s web series—Quote of the Week—features interviews with lottery directors about what’s ahead for their organizations in fiscal 2023. Over the last 13 months, we have featured a different lottery director each week in the Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States. This week we are spotlighting Sue van der Merwe, CEO, The Lottery Corporation (operator of The Lott in Australia).

What’s ahead for your lottery in FY23?

“FY23 will be our first full year of operations as a stand-alone lotteries and keno company, having demerged from Tabcorp in June. We’ve got a highly engaged team who share my excitement about our future.

There’s a lot on our agenda in the next 12 months, but significant themes for this year will include forging our own company culture, enhancing our commitment to community and continuing to focus on the strategies that have been driving our success over the past few years.

We have a strong focus on product innovation, customer experience, actively managing our game portfolio and driving performance through our distribution channels, both retail and digital. We’ve just recently implemented a change to our Oz Lotto game which we’ll see play through in FY23; we’ll continue to support our omni channel program which is centred around making it easy for our customers to play when, where and how they wish; and investing in personalised and data-driven marketing remains a focus.”

What book are you currently reading?

“I’ve just started reading The Happiest Man on Earth by Eddie Jaku. Eddie was a Holocaust survivor who moved to Australia at the end of World War II. Despite everything he went through during the war, he spent his life promoting a message of resilience, kindness and tolerance. He passed away in Sydney last year at the age of 101.”

Where do you plan to vacation in the next six months?

“It’s been so great to see international travel back on the agenda so I’m excited to be planning a trip to Italy later this year.”
