Ireland’s National Lottery has launched TLC: Think, Look, Check, a retailer-focused age verification and compliance campaign designed to strengthen point-of-sale controls for National Lottery products.
The campaign follows underage mystery shopper research carried out by the Regulator of the National Lottery in 2024. The regulator said the research showed progress since 2018, but nearly three in ten shops visited were still prepared to sell National Lottery products to minors.
The National Lottery said the initiative is supported by mandatory compliance training videos for retailers. The training covers age-control laws and legal obligations under the license and the National Lottery Act, the risks and impact of underage gambling, and practical approaches for preventing underage play at retail.
The launch was attended by Minister Jack Chambers, Regulator of the National Lottery Carol Boate, National Lottery CEO Cian Murphy and representatives of the Convenience Stores and Newsagents Association. The National Lottery said further measures are planned, including a new retailer app and additional training videos.
The National Lottery said nearly 30 cents of every euro spent on its games returns to Good Causes. It said EUR239.3 million was raised for Good Causes in 2024 and about EUR7 billion has been raised since the lottery launched 39 years ago.
