The UK government opened a consultation September 23 on a proposal to prohibit licensed betting operators from offering wagers on Powerball outcomes to consumers in Great Britain. Responses are due November 4, 2026.
The proposed restriction follows Allwyn UK’s introduction of Powerball to the National Lottery on July 21. The consultation is a separate regulatory step, and the proposed ban has not been enacted.
According to the government, the existing prohibition on betting on National Lottery games does not cover the underlying U.S. Powerball draw. Customers can therefore buy an official National Lottery entry or bet on the draw through a third-party operator.
The government says that distinction could confuse players and divert spending from National Lottery good causes. It is seeking evidence on whether customers who currently bet on Powerball would switch to official entries.
The proposal would introduce a license condition covering general betting, pool betting and betting intermediary licenses. Operators could continue offering bets on other lotteries outside the National Lottery portfolio, such as Irish Lotto.
