The North Carolina Education Lottery marked 20 years on March 30, having sold its first ticket on March 30, 2006. Across two decades the lottery has raised more than $12 billion for educational programs in the state, including three consecutive years above $1 billion in annual contributions. Lifetime impact figures shared by the operator include funding for more than 100 new or renovated schools, free pre-K for over 270,000 children, $800 million toward 1.3 million college scholarships and grants, and $4 billion directed to school construction projects.
The milestone also reflects steady growth on the player side. The top scratch-off prize has climbed from $100,000 at launch to $10 million today, and player winnings have grown from $451 million in 2006 to $4.9 billion in fiscal 2025. NCEL says it returns 96 cents of every dollar to North Carolina residents in prizes, education funding, retailer commissions, and operations, supports more than 7,200 retail businesses statewide, and is the only US lottery to post sales increases in every year of operation. The operator also holds the World Lottery Association’s highest player-protection certification.
